While the initial financial outlay seems like a pain for the egg producer, an outbreak of an egg related disease that may come from one production flock/ paddock/ bay/ shed/ farm, could be could be isolated if the culprit egg was traceable in the first place, ie had a batch ID code printed on it. The batch code can also be recorded against the carton that it has been stored in using OCR technology. The current situation would probably see one of our islands being shut down for a week or two for a major egg related disease, if found to be at fault.
